Innovation and creativity are essential for fostering growth and adaptability within any organisation, and the field of education is no exception. As the demand for learner-centred, flexible educational approaches continues to rise, management teams in Further Education and Training (FET) must adopt innovative strategies to stay relevant and effective. By embracing design thinking educational leaders can reimagine their systems to meet the evolving needs of learners and industries.

INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES FOR FET SUCCESS

Education & Training (FET)

In a landmark collaboration between South East Technological University (SETU) and Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board (WWETB), a pioneering research project has demonstrated the transformative power of design thinking in education. This initiative, led by Aisling Hurley MSc (Design for Innovation Strategist) and Dr. Lindsay Malone (WWETB’s Director of FET), highlights actionable strategies to bring creativity into your educational management team and revolutionise adult learning.

The Role of Design Thinking in Innovation for Education

Design thinking is more than a problem-solving tool—it’s a mindset that prioritises empathy, creativity, and collaboration. By integrating this approach, Further Education and Training Management teams can address complex challenges, foster innovation, and enhance its value proposition for learners and stakeholders. Key benefits of bringing design thinking into educational management include:

  • Empowering learners: Encouraging critical thinking and adaptability to prepare students for dynamic workplaces.
  • Breaking silos: Enhancing communication and collaboration within management teams and across centres.
  • Addressing frustrations: Systematically tackling roadblocks to innovation with actionable strategies.

Key Learnings from the FET Design Thinking Initiative

The research project between SETU and WWETB employed design thinking to reimagine FET systems through a learner-centred lens. A thematic analysis of interviews with FET co-ordinators uncovered several critical insights:

Strategic Planning Gaps

Many programmes lacked focus, indicating a need for centre-specific specialisation and clearer pathways.

Opportunities for Innovation

Ideas included creating hubs for social entrepreneurship, adopting the “learn and earn” model, and fostering bespoke collaborations with local stakeholders.

Challenges in Communication

Silos within the organisation hampered collaboration and innovation.

Collaborative Design Thinking Workshops

To address these challenges, a series of workshops brought co-ordinators together to ideate solutions. Using a customised design thinking framework, participants identified opportunities such as:

    Collaboration across Schools

The workshops also focused on mapping the current state of FET, exploring market trends, and identifying areas for growth. This collaborative approach has helped FET teams develop a cohesive, user-centred strategic roadmap.

    Strategic Planning Gaps

    • Leveraging the circular economy and greentech to align FET offerings with future industry needs.

    Opportunities for Innovation

    • Empowering women to return to the workforce or start businesses.

    Challenges in Communication

    • Strengthening relationships with local businesses, councils, and other stakeholders.
